Dumpling Darlings District 616 Miramar
Carb Fairy Dessert Co. (2012 Winner) District 12

The Carb Fairy Dessert Co. was formed to celebrate life through the creation of delicious treats. In addition to our mochi dumplings, we have won awards for a variety of sweet indulgences, including cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. Let’s make life sweeter!

“Bánh Mì Dumpling” We were inspired by the flavors in a bánh mì for our dumpling. Inside we have lemongrass-ginger marinated chicken wrapped in bread and panko. Our dumpling is accompanied by a carrot-daikon slaw and jalapeño aioli.

Team Dumpling Darlings consists of five friends who love to cook and eat together in their beautiful house on Miramar Avenue. They met as roommates and soon discovered their shared love of cooking and eating delicious food.

Our recipe name is "Five-Spiced Duck Dumpling". The potsticker will be made completely from scratch, starting with a hand-rolled, flour wrapper. The filling is also made from scratch and includes Chinese 5-spice duck (braised for 3 hours), taro, shiitake mushroom, kabocha squash, herbs & spices. The dumpling will be pan-fried (potsticker-style) and served with a dipping sauce and garlic chili oil.

Every member of our team either graduated from San Francisco State or is currently working for the University. We are all proud "Gators.” We came together because of the College of Ethnic Studies and working on their many fundraising events over the past several years. We chose District ‘68 in honor of the strike of 1968 at SF State.

“Moroccan-Inspired Lamb Dumpling” We are making a deep-fried, Moroccan tagine-inspired dumpling with lamb, turkey, carrots, onions, raisins, and spices, drizzled with a harissa yogurt sauce.

Branded as losers and misfits, Wayne, Jared, Eric, Jason, Ben, and Sayuri have overcome odds to cook their way to victory for their districts in past Hungry Games. Now banding together for the very first time, they look forward to the challenge to rise again and outcook The Capitol and other tributes.

“The Mac of All Dumplings” American comfort food meets Asian comfort food. Mac n' cheese meets dumplings. A holy marriage. A tasty mix. The perfect hapa. What will happen? But for reals, what could go better than creamy mac and cheese, with savory pieces of bacon and crab, swimming in a velvety blend of sharp cheddar and pepper jack, all enclosed in a crispy, but tender, panko-topped wrapper. It's crazy, but so is the best kind of marriage.

The "Tributes"

A group of artists, community organizers and foodies form Team Better Pork Tomorrow. Struggling under the societal pressures of Asian American stereotypes to “overachieve”, these misfits act out in their hunger for artistic creativity, social change, and most of all, FOOD. Their small-time foodie dabblings only intensify as they delve into the dangerous realm of the Dumpling Wars. The cutthroat dumpling game may be too much for this rag-tag group of amateurs. Win or lose, the underdogs of Team B.P.T. will continue to create, fight, and eat for another tomorrow.

“Thrice-Cooked Pork Sisig Dumplings” Our Thrice-Cooked Pork Sisig Dumpling features pig’s head and pork belly, boiled in a brine of spices and flavorings. The boiled pork is then chopped into pieces and fried with onions, garlic, peppers, and soy sauce. Scallions and mayonnaise are added to the mixture, and wrapped in wheat flour dumpling wrappers by the spoonful. The dumplings are cooked for the third time and served, of course, with a squeeze of citrus.

TBW is Taste Better Wit, San Francisco sketch comedy group and resident artists at Bindlestiff Studio. In addition to SF Sketchfest, KSW's APAture 2013, and most recently performing their original comedy, 'Only Samurai', TBW often gathers in the moonlight over a grill, a stove, and now, for the Hungry Games, a bamboo steamer. We're a bunch of old kids who grew up in the San Francisco Chinatown hood. We have a deep love and appreciation for Chinatown comfort foods we grew up with.
