Curatorial Statement:

"In this exhibition you will find work that you or I might consider beautiful, inspiring, or successful, but is nevertheless defined in one way or another as a failure by the artist. Certainly, to publicly display work one identifies as “failed” requires no small amount of self-awareness, humility, backbone, and a sense of humor. But despite the sensational title of this exhibition, this show isn’t just about celebrating failure (or the cliché notion of failure as the path to success, which we duly acknowledge). Rather, we submit that assessing failure may provide a unique perspective into the various motivations and intentions informing artistic production.

In asking artists to put their worst foot forward (and to contextualize the work via corresponding texts), we are asking artists to define the parameters of their craft, to articulate their motivations along with their varying intentions and end goals, and to share what could have been. Through these works we observe myriad approaches to experimentation and risk-taking, while gaining insight into how an artist envisions individual success. Ultimately, what is on display is a wide range of methodologies that artists employ throughout the process of creating work. We hope you enjoy."
