A portfolio is a visual artist’s primary tool in presenting one’s self, and can open the doors to many career opportunities. This hands-on, three-part workshop demystifies the preparation process and provides insider savvy into what galleries, institutions, admissions officers, and funders are looking for. It is aimed at beginning artists and mid-career artists seeking a refresher.

 

Day 1: UNDERSTANDING THE ARTS ECOSYSTEM

This course gives a broad overview of the arts ecosystem and how to tailor a portfolio for a specific, intended recipient. It also offers resources for networking and self-promotion. Instructor: Weston Teruya

 

Day 2: D-I-Y DOCUMENTATION

This course introduces participants to the tools of the photography trade, and includes tips and tricks for documenting on a small budget. It covers 2D, 3D, and site-specific pieces. Instructor: Ben Needham

 

Day 3: THE WRITE SKILLS: ARTIST’S PACKET

Utilizing readings, exercises, and critiques, this writing course instructs on how to put together a well-curated artist’s packet (statement, biography, curriculum vitae, slide list, etc.). Instructor: Claire Light

Instructor Bios

 

CLAIRE LIGHT is a Bay Area writer and cultural worker. As program manager for Kearny Street Workshop from 1999-2003, she co-founded the annual APAture festival, and is currently serving as KSW's executive director. She served on the curatorial committee of The Lab 1999-2005, and has volunteered in nearly every capacity at a variety of other arts nonprofits. Her MFA in fiction came from San Francisco State University, and some of her fiction is published in McSweeney's, Hyphen, Farthing, and The Encyclopedia Project. A collection of her short stories, called SLIGHTLY BEHIND AND TO THE LEFT, was published by Aqueduct Press December 2009. She has taught writing to teens, college students, and adults at San Francisco's School of the Arts, San Francisco State University, and Kearny Street Workshop, among others. Website

 

BEN NEEDHAM began his photography career shooting rare tomes, maps, and arcane art objects for a San Francisco-based auction house. He also worked as a photography assistant to architectural and lifestyle photographers at Sunset Magazine in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ben later worked in digital production at Stanford University before moving to New York City where he became a photographer of fine art. Clients included artists, galleries, and art institutions within the New York and international art world. Website

 

WESTON TERUYA was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai‘i and currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has had solo exhibitions at Intersection for the Arts and Patricia Sweetow Gallery in San Francisco and Pro Arts in Oakland. He has also exhibited at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Palo Alto Art Center. Weston has had residencies at the Montalvo Arts Center and Oliver Ranch Studio Artist Residency and was a recipient of a 2009 Artadia grant. Weston received an MFA in Painting and Drawing and MA in Visual & Critical Studies from California College of the Arts. He is an associate officer of the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Cultural Equity Grants Program. Website
