What's up with the sunflower seeds?

Tammy Nguyen is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program at the University of California, Berkeley. In coming up with the original concept, the 22-year-old Vietnamese American wanted to reference an existing work of art. She says: "I based it on Ai Wei Wei's sunflower seeds, in which he made ten tons of porcelain sunflower seeds by hand. It made me think about how each seed is unique, but when you see them together, it creates this huge mass. I thought about how each artist in the festival will have his or her own unique practice within the scope of this broader event."
